“Genuine warmth, flexibility, care and friendliness of staff is our biggest USP….” – Anand Chatterjee, GM, Planet Hollywood, Goa
In Conversation with Aarti Kapur Singh

The genuine warmth, flexibility, care and friendliness of staff is the biggest USP.
Anand Chatterjee
General ManagerPlanet Hollywood, Goa

The most important aspect of feeling like a star is to be treated like one! Planet Hollywood Resort is synonymous the world over with providing the right blend of service, luxury and quiet efficiency, internationally acclaimed for all-round excellence and unparalleled levels of service. Built on a 10-acre piece of Uttorda, one of the cleanest beaches in Goa, Planet Hollywood has a stunning collection of rooms, each with its unique piece of Hollywood memorabilia and prosperously appointed facilities.

Tell us something about your background.

I did Hotel Management from IHM Calcutta. I joined Welcome group Management Institute (WMI) as a Hotel Executive Trainee and graduated in 2001. My career includes pre-opening and operations of ITC Grand Maratha Sheraton in Mumbai and ITC Sonar Bangla Sheraton in Calcutta. Have also worked with ITC Grand Kakatiya Sheraton, Hyderabad and ITC Park Sheraton, Chennai before joining The Oberoi Hotels and Resorts. With the Oberoi Group, have worked in several resorts including The Oberoi Udaivilas, The Oberoi Rajvilas, Trident, Chennai, The Oberoi Wildflower Hall and Trident Bandra-Kurla.

An avid reader and aviation enthusiast, have also done several general management courses from Cornell and Harvard.

What is the history of your association with JMJ Group/ Planet Hollywood?

I became a part of Planet Hollywood Beach Resort, Goa in the construction phase and brought it to operations with set up of systems and procedures. Its Planet Hollywood’s first hotel outside USA. So I and my team have been involved in getting the brand set up, system integration and all allied activities.

What kind of travellers are you targeting?

Goa is primarily a leisure destination be it for pure family/friends leisure trip or business leisure like off-sites and incentives. It’s also a great wedding destination. Although it generates some amount of room nights from the local Industrial Zones, the leisure tourists dominate the business.

Goa is inundated with all kinds of hotels that offer unique experiences… How does Planet Hollywood plan to stand out? Tell us more about the experiences on offer?

Planet Hollywood of Las Vegas is a larger than life Casino Hotel truly representing the spectacle of the city. However, all Planet Hollywood Hotels and Resorts coming up in various locations are family-fun resorts. The USP of Planet Hollywood Beach Resort, Goa is its team. Obviously, it has a great location on the white sands beach, smart and cool rooms with Hollywood artwork, vast garden and delectable food and beverage offer. But the genuine warmth, flexibility, care and friendliness of staff is the biggest USP. In terms of local concepts, first and foremost the architecture. The resort’s main structure with tiled-sloped roof represents Goa in a subtle and understated way. The vibrant colors of various areas add to it. Across the resort, there are many contemporary art forms which are inherently Indian at the same time does not interfere with the contemporary look of the resort.

King room night

Goa is a 365 days destination and it’s growing. So there will be enough demand in the market for medium term. During the season, we shall also operate the luxury tents on the beach front. These tents will create upside of rates for us. We shall be only ones to operate such luxury tents on the beach front among all the hotels.

What are some of the unique aspects of Planet Hollywood in Goa that travellers must experience?

Firstly, Planet Hollywood Beach Resort, Goa is a hotel of complete different genre. Possibly it’s the first one of its kind in terms of architecture, interiors and the service design. One of the strongest points of the hotel is the extremely high level of engagement with guests through personalization, flexibility and the genuine warmth and care of the team.

What all is planned in terms of expansion, adding new experiences, customer delight etc for the future?

We have the right to open Planet Hollywood Hotels and its branded restaurants like Earl of Sandwich, Planet Hollywood Restaurant etcetera in India.

Personally, which is your favorite hotel in the world and why?

Being a hotelier, I keep learning and observing some or the other “touch points” of all the hotels which I visit. There are many hotels I love for various reasons. However I think HuvafenFushi, Maldives is my most favourite.

And one place in the world you are really keen to visit…

Tibet is the country I would love to visit.
