Chef Cyrus Todiwala has won over UK with his culinary skills. Now he has journeyed back to India to establish his fifth restaurant — The River Restaurant — at a new boutique resort property called Acron Waterfront Resort in Goa. Whether you are dining indoors or outdoors, The River Restaurant appeals at many levels. The 60-seater Parisian-styled eatery is committed to the development of dishes that make full use of Goa’s fresh seafood and wide variety of fruits and vegetables. Although authenticity is important, innovation is the buzz word at The River Restaurant. Therefore local flavours are explored, new textures are experimented with and tastes are evolved. Pork, for instance, a staple Goan ingredient comes to your plate at The River Restaurant in these quaint tartlets that leave you asking for more. Though in its Assado avatar, it tastes just as good.
Goa has a huge European culinary influence, owing to the 400 years of Portuguese rule which brought garlic, chillies, tomatoes and potatoes to the local table. Traditional items such as the Balchao and the divine prawn curry served with traditional red rice revive gourmet Goan flavours disappearing due to shack food culture. The Riverside Restaurant’s version of this fiery Goan delight is a little tame, but even then, is the star charmer at The Riverside Restaurant, where it can be devoured alongside traditional red rice, steamed rice or even a loaf or two of poi – traditional Goan bread. While the prawn version was good too, the King Fish Balchao is to die for. One bite and you will be transported to gastronomic heaven as the burst of sweet and sour mixed with spicy flavours explode in your mouth.
Resident chefs Savio and George are more than happy to share culinary secrets – such as how a Saraswat Xacuti is different from a Goan one. While the menu is for reference only, Savio and George are ever-eager to rustle up something exclusively for you – even cook the fish you catch at the river Baga, on which the restaurant is built.
Do try the signature cocktail, The Acron Sundowner and you will be floating in the magical notes of watermelon and cranberry with white rum. They also do a killer Feni Mojito, which again is a must-try.
Indulge your sweet tooth with Goan Pancakes – stuffed with jaggery and coconut and served with vanilla ice-cream and a drizzling of port wine.
Enter a whole new world of culinary wonder at The River Restaurant with multi-award winning Master Chef Cyrus Todiwala and his team of India’s best chefs as they create an avant-garde Goan menu that has subtle flourishes of his signature global style.
